General Electric Company (NYSE:GE) has taken a different route from its normal business. The Boston-based company is venturing into the autonomous vehicle technologies’ market. This has resulted in the launch of a new company christened AiRXOS, which will focus on traffic management for unmanned aircraft systems. This will happen on the ground and in the air and will bring together companies such as Intel Corporation (NASDAQ:INTC) and FedEx Corporation (NYSE:FDX).

GE’s initiative comes at a time when drones, which more often than not are being flown by hobbyists and the military. However, with the new move, the use of drones is likely to become a means of transport. Besides drone supporters are increasing by the day.

The need for new systems for managing the increase in air traffic

The use of drones means they will be sharing the skies with airplanes, helicopters, and other aerial vehicles. This raises the need for new and ideal systems to make this vision real. However, AiRXOS general manager, Ken Stewart says that they will be creating systems for government agencies and aviation authorities. The private sector will also be incorporated in the creation of the systems, which will feature infrastructure, software and hardware, and services.

GE’s aviation business hit the market in 2016 and at the formation of AiRXOS. It is not clear how much GE is investing in the new drone venture but Stewart emphasizes, “We’re addressing the complexity of integrating unmanned vehicles into the national airspace.”

The future of AiRXOS and its plans

The launch of AiRXOS outlines the growth technology. In addition, it explains the revamping of the transportation system by robotics. The company says that other than unmanned aircraft systems, it will embark on others such as integration pilot program.

Meanwhile, there is a lot in store for AiRXOS given that it will be working hand in hand with the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and NASA. Stewart further confirms that the company will be developing a sort of Waze or Google Maps for drone flights. Plans are also underway to open an office in Syracuse, NY. However, the company will also work with the city of Memphis, TN, and the Choctaw Nation of Oklahoma. This is in addition to other groundwork, which will enhance future aviation.
