How Wearable Devices Are Changing the Gene Tracking Industry

A new research report from the Scripps Research Institute is conducting a report on the use of wearable biometric devices to help track genetics of the individual. This could help to not only diagnose, but treat those with certain types of medical ailments. A project known as the All of Us project recently launched an initiative to enroll over one million people.

The goal is to track data regarding different medical and socioeconomic factors. The study is attempting to see if there are any ties between the data. Scripps is giving out around 10,000 Fitbit trackers to an equal amount of people to collect data consisting of: heart rate, physical activity and sleep information. This data is part of the pilot study to help figure out whether biometric fitness trackers can help provide a better idea of the individual lifestyle.

Adam Pellegrini, the general manager of Fitbit Health Solutions, stated that “as part of the global shift towards precision medicine, wearable data has the potential to inform highly personalized healthcare.” The project is the latest addition in a series of projects related to the proliferation of the healthcare industry regarding wearable biometrics.

The market on wearable biometrics is something that is growing at an exponential amount. The healthcare industry is only one sector that biometrics are helping to shape and reshape. With the introduction of tech devices such as the Fitbit and the Apple Watch, wearable biometrics are reaching new highs everyday. Biometrics have a high amount of potential to change various industries as new technology is made.
